Chapter 7
He wouldnât answer. Lynette stared at him, waiting like an idiot, hoping he swept her in his arms, declaring she was the best thing to ever happen to him. But no, he just stood there looking at her with a pained expression as if what he had to say would leave her feeling even more rejected than she had the other night. She refused to let it happen again.
Lynette narrowed her eyes and turned sharp on her toes. Marching toward the back door, she said, âIâm assuming youâll lock up when you leaveâ¦since Gannon gave you a key.â
She didnât know if he replied or not, and it didnât matter. Once she stepped outside, an anguishing squeeze took hold of her lungs, set fire to her chest. Had she been holding her breath? An attempt to suck in oxygen was stifled by the humid air. It felt like trying to breathe underwater. She backed against the brick building and leaned forward, propping her hands on her knees. She inhaled, but...nothing. Standing straight, she latched her fingers behind her head and tried again. A little relief came, enough to climb the stairs to her apartment. She needed to shower, wash away the stink that came from working as a waitress in a smoke filled bar, scrub away the feel of his touch. She wished he would have just kept his distance.
Closing the door and locking it behind her, Lynette peeked out the window, watching until she saw him get in his jeep. When the headlights came on she pretended to breathe normal again and went to the bathroom and hopped in the shower.
Staying in Pineville much longer wasnât an option. She had to go. The people were great, most of them anyway, and she hated to leave but living there only promised frequent run-ins with Ty Sellers. His hot and cold demeanor had taken its last toll on her nerves. Besides, it wasnât as if she couldnât find someone better in another town, someone who would appreciate her, do everything possible to make her feel wanted. But whoever stumbled in her life wouldnât be him. The scenario sheâd given Jennica the other day slammed her chest and left a giant hole there. At least she knew what town to never wander through again.
Her mind was made up, and she would tell her cousin tomorrow that sheâd be gone within a week.
Lynette shut the water off and towel dried. She slipped on a wife-beater tank and a pair of cotton boxers. Brushing her hair, she left it to air dry and grabbed a book to help her wind down, clear her mind of Ty. She went to the bedroom, climbed in bed, and turned on the nightstand lamp. No sooner than she settled under the comforter three loud bangs at the front door jolted her to her feet. Instinctively, she grabbed the baseball bat that always sat next her bed for protection. The dang thing had been with her since her second semester in college.
